10 KINDS OF COFFEE FROM AROUND THE GLOBE

Former Life And Trust Chairman J.G. Conwell believed in scouring the earth for inspiration, by embarking on several global expeditions each year. During these voyages, the financial titan would sample as many diverse coffee drinks as he could, savoring each rich cultural experience.

Would you like to follow in Conwell’s worldly footsteps by learning about coffees across culture? Read on to discover what coffee tastes like around the globe

  1. CAFÉ AU LAIT: As they lounge along the Seine, many Parisians sip café au lait: a strongly brewed coffee with equal parts hot milk.
  2. CORTADO: We have Spain to thank for the cortado: an espresso “cut” with warm milk to reduce acidity. Valencia, Spain is responsible for Café Bombón: a sweet drink that is equal parts espresso and condensed milk.
  3. CÀ PHÊ ĐÁ: Vietnamese Coffee, or Cà phê đá, uses dark roast coffee, hot water, and sweetened condensed milk to create a classic drink, often served over ice.
  4. IRISH COFFEE: If you’re craving a stronger kick in your coffee, try Ireland’s creative solution: coffee mixed with Irish whiskey and sugar, topped with whipped cream.
  5. CAFÉ CUBANO: Cuba graced coffee lovers with the Café Cubano: espresso brewed with sugar to sweeten the result.
  6. TURKISH COFFEE: In Turkey, treat yourself to a coffee simmered in water with sugar in a cezve, or ibrik, and served unfiltered. Some coffee lovers take their Turkish coffee spiced with cardamom.
  7. GREEK COFFEE: Similar to Turkish coffee, Greek coffee is brewed in an ibrik or cezve. However, Greek coffee is considered slightly sweeter, due to the way it is brewed: in an open-top pot instead of the slightly narrower-necked Turkish pot.
  8. FLAT WHITE: Australians and Kiwis are considered the inventors of the Flat White: a mix of espresso and steamed milk, with a higher ratio of espresso-to-milk than the latte.
  9. CAFÉ TOUBA: In Senegal, you might savor a café touba: coffee flavored with djar (Selim or Guinea pepper) and occasionally cloves.
  10. ESPRESSO: No exploration of coffee would be complete without paying homage to la bella madre herself: Italy. Italians are famous for their espresso: concentrated coffee created by forcing hot water through finely-ground coffee beans. Coffee aficionados can also thank Italy for the cappuccino (an espresso topped with steamed milk and foam in equal measure), the latte (an espresso topped with more steamed milk and less foam), the macchiato (an espresso “stained” with a tiny amount of foam), and the delicious affogato (a scoop of gelato or ice cream “drowned” in a shot of warm espresso).
